Kick in the morning, Java, and wake up juice
No matter what we call it, few of us could get by without at least one cup of coffee when we wake up. While we all know about the brew’s eye-opening benefits, there’s new evidence to show that an extract from the beans may have fat-fighting potential.
Where Does It Come From
Green coffee is simply unroasted seeds or beans from the Coffea plant that gives us so many of our morning brew. Having many healthful benefits, coffee contains hundreds of compounds.
What It Can Do for You
The main green coffee extract benefits that is causing quite a bit of buzz are its weight loss and antioxidant components.
Research data gives support that chlorogenic acid in green coffee beans can have an effect on body weight and fat loss, this is according to Lona Sandon, R.D., assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. The studies conducted have been:
- The Study in India
A study in India found that people taking pills with green coffee bean extract lost an average of 18 pounds or 10 percent of their body weight over 22 weeks. The study, published in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity, tested two doses of extract, 700mg and 1,050mg per day.
- The Dr. Oz study
The show’s medical unit responded to the buzz with its own study. They included more people in their study – 100 women – with the experiment running two weeks. The women taking green coffee bean extract lost 2 pounds and the women taking inactive pills lost a pound. Results were somewhat close because all participants kept a food journal, which may have made both groups “more aware of their diet.”
The Dr. Oz study used 400mg, three times a day, which is slightly more than the high dose in the Indian study. The recommended intake is 500mg daily.
Risks and scrutiny
Long-term safety of green coffee bean extract is unknown although no side effects were noticed with either the Indian or Dr. Oz study. The bottom line is to use common sense and not take any supplements when pregnant or to consult a doctor before taking any supplement.
Here are tips from the experts for the best green coffee extract benefits:
- Buy a reputable brand with at least 45% chlorogenic acid. Avoid brands with lots of fillers or artificial ingredients.
- Don’t overdo it. More isn’t always better so stick to 500mg daily.
- Look for side effects, such as rapid heart rate, elevated blood pressure, or signs of an allergic reaction. Don’t take if you are allergic to coffee or caffeine.
- Exercise and eat healthy. Nothing beats this combination for losing weight. Green coffee extract benefits work best when supported with good food and physical activity.
